I said "No, thank you," since that would be very cold indeed, and I did not relish the thought of spending winter in the icy depths of New Hampshire. I received an email in October 2021, inviting me to attend MacDowell in January of 2022. Lightning did strike twice when I was accepted into MacDowell - on a full scholarship, plus stipend and allowance.īy signing up with an email address, I acknowledge that I have read and agree to the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. I sent some of my short stories from The Heart of Summer, the book of stories and tales I was writing. This gave me the courage to apply for MacDowell in 2019. I felt as if lightning had struck me when I got accepted. I sent a copy of my first novel, Riverrun. I was the Head of School-English at the University of Nottingham in Malaysia and wanted to write a new book. In 2017, I applied for the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference and promptly forgot about it. In my young mind, I fantasized about going there and writing a book, too, in the heart of the woodlands. IN the 1990s, I read that Jessica Hagedorn wrote part of her celebrated novel, Dogeaters, at the MacDowell Arts Residency in New Hampshire, and that Eric Gamalinda also spent time there. The author stayed at the Sorosis studio in the MacDowell Arts Residency, where he revised his book, 'The Heart of Summer: Stories and Tales,' to be published by Penguin.
